Capoeira is a martial art that was developed by the slaves of Brazil during the 16th Century to defend against their oppressors. Thanks largely to groups of specially trained Capoeira fighters, many Brazilian slaves escaped bondage and established remote black-only villages called Quilombos. These Capoeiristas helped to maintain the freedom and independence of former slaves living in these colonies for nearly a century.
Over the last decade, Capoeira has become a worldwide phenomenon. Modern day Capoeira, however, has transformed from a deadly combat sport into an artistic exhibition of agility, music, and deep tradition. Most of today's Capoeira schools teach a form of Capoeira that resembles a cockfight with two opponents facing off in a roda (circle) and demonstrating their bravado simply by outwitting their opponent. Opponents show they could attack, but rarely actually do.
At Ascension, we bring back the functional Capoeira developed by the slaves for self-defense. We incorporate the unconventional sweeps, kicks, strikes, and even headbutts of this ancient sport into our curriculum, which gives our students a unique style and an arsenal of maneuvers seldom known by other fighters.
Combat Capoeira is not a stand alone class at AMMA at this time. "Combat Capo" is in corporated into the Practical Striking Class. Contact AMMA for mor info! |
